Remembering Jimmy Wopo

This morning, as the sun rose over the three rivers of Pittsburgh, the city remained as silent as it fell last night. At the age of 21 Jimmy Wopo, a leader in Pittsburgh culture and young rapper, has passed away after a shooting in the Hill District Neighborhood.

Wopo was a son, a grandson, a brother, a friend, a father, and perhaps most importantly a young man full of dreams. It has been impossible for the past two years to enter the city of Pittsburgh without hearing about Wopo or hearing Elm Street in the distance. He was and is loved.

Today, in a world seemingly devoid of compassion, we at Groupie ask that you spread love, remember Jimmy Wopo, and that you are compassionate to your fellow human.

As a fromer Point Park University Student, and as someone whose family is from the Pittsburgh region, my heart is with the city of Pittsburgh this week of all weeks as they begin to heal.

Groupie is currently making plans to visit the City at the end of June or early July to speak with anyone who would like to be heard on this tragedy. If anyone has kind words, memories, or simply thoughts or photographs they would like to share please reach out to myself at groupiesounds@gmail.com to arrange a meeting. It is my goal to ensure that anyone who is passionate about Wopo being remembered will have a platform to publish their thoughts.

We've created this playlist with Wopo's music if you'd like to remember his work today.
